Germfree Water with Chlorine Dioxide
Water is essential for manufacturer handling with food. It is additive, cooling liquid, cleaning medium and more. Due to this it must be 100 percent clean and germ-free.
That has been the problem: Fattorie Osella, an Italian dairy company part of the international group Kraft Foods, needed to use 200 mc/h of microbiologically controlled water within its facility. Water, to be used for secondary purposes, without getting in contact with the end product, showed little microbial-related problems, in particular the presence of Pseudomonas.
Chlorine dioxide disinfects water durable
The use of chlorine dioxide acted both as a disinfecting agent and controller of the possible recontamination of the hydraulic lines thanks to the recognised stability in time (depot effect).
“From the comparison with various disinfectants usually used in water treatment, the dioxide is the agent that ensures the best compromise in terms of biocide efficiency, time stability, as well as stability in a wide pH range” says eng. Andrea Peluso, Head Engineering Department of ProMinent Italiana.
To facilitate plantengineering and to make the system as much user-friendly as possible, ProMinent Italiana has developed a solution that foresees the installation of all the machinery required for the generation and control of chlorine dioxide inside a prefabricated building.
“With this installation we have enabled to achieve and meet the high safety standards required” says eng. Andrea Peluso.
Guaranteed safety
The prefabricated building is divided into two rooms: dioxide room (where the chlorine dioxide generator is located with the control board and the chlorine dioxide analysis chain) and the chemical reagent room (where the chemical product storage tanks are located). The chemical reagent room hosts the chemicals tanks (9% hydrochloric acid and 7.5% sodium chlorite).
The two rooms can be accessed in an independent way from the outside. The room division enables to work on the global management switchboard and on the dioxide generator without getting in contact with the tanks or with the chemicals loading.
“The manoeuvres required to fill the chemical products occur in absolute safety and with top easiness. Everything through semi-automatic procedure controlled by the general control panel” says eng. Andrea Peluso.
